GEOGRAPHY: Corfu is 56km long and has a maximum width of 27km with an overall size of 593sq km.
GENERAL IMPRESSIONS: Green and lush, tall once gracious but now rather faded grand buildings, varies from modern squalid to old-fashioned beautiful with an interesting blend of Venetian, French and British architecture. The British administered Corfu between 1815-1864 and some lasting peculiarities remain including a number of fine buildings, brass bands, the Esplanade cricket pitch, a large British cemetery and ginger beer! The island is also remarkable for the presence of a thriving Roman Catholic population.
