About the Greek island of Kastellorizo

POPULATION: About 200 people still live on Kastellorizo (red castle) a far cry from the 15-17,000 that lived on the island circa 1833 when the island was handed to the Turks in exchange for the island of Evia. The first world war heralded the decline and was finished off during the second world war.
GEOGRAPHY: Kastellorizo remains a very quiet unspoilt location with no beaches but excellent rocky coves and fish-filled seas that are amazingly clear. The island is only about 9sq km in area.
GENERAL IMPRESSIONS: Attractive port, bygone affluence, crumbling houses and ruins, crystal clear seas, seafood, fiercely Greek.
SPECIALITIES: Seafood, stavro and katimari two pastries made with honey and nuts.
