About the Greek island of Milos

ALTERNATIVE NAMES: Melos, Milo, Milos

ISLAND GROUP: Cyclades Greek Islands

POPULATION: Between 4,500 and 5.000

GEOGRAPHY: The island has an area of about 160 sq km, is roughtly 20 km wide, 13 kem deep and would resemble a flattened circle if it were not for the huge horseshoe bay that almost divides the island in two. The nature of the rocks and the huge Adamas Bay indicates that an ancient volcanic eruption tore the centre out of the island. Much of the countryside that is not being mined is fertile.

GENERAL IMPRESSIONS: Attractive sea approach, dramatic coastline, the island appears to be under reconstruction by mining and quarrying, saline water, old men's attire includes a cummerbund

SPECIALITIES: Venus de Milo, mining, hot springs

ADMIN:

TELEPHONE PREFIX: 22870

MAIN TOWNS: Adamas is the sprawling rather unattractive main town and port for the island. Trypiti is 6km from Adamas and there there are windmills, an ancient theatre and Christian catacombs dating back to the 1st Century AD. Plaka is 6km from Adamas and is a pedestian maze. Pollonia, 9km from Adamas is a pretty fishing port set around a semi-circular bay with a sandy tree edged beach where there are plenty of rooms and hotels.
