MAIN TOWNS: Naxos is the main port and captial town of the island. It is a busy commercial seaport with holiday resorts on either side. Has one of the best sandy beaches in the Cyclades and there is lots and lots of holiday accommodation in the maze of alleyways. Appolanas is 30 km from Naxos town on a northern bay sheltered by high mountainsides and is a tourist resort in its own right. Lionas is 44 km from Naxos and has an orleander planted river bed that tumbles down a steep gorge. The beach at the bottom of the bay is made up of large pebbles.
