About the Greek Island of Poros

ALTERNATIVE NAMES: Poros

GROUP: Argo Saronic Islands

POPULATION: 4000+

GEOGRAPHY: Poros is actually 2 islands separated by a very narrow ditch. The main land mass is called Kalavria and Spheria is the smaller part where you find the main town and port. The overall area of land is about 31sq km, with an east to west length of 6 km and maximum width of 3 km. Poros faces the Peloponnese town of Galatas which is accessible from Poros by passenger boat or car ferry. The countryside is very green with plenty of pine trees. The beaches are of imported sand.

GENERAL IMPRESSIONS: Pretty, green countryside, friendly people, flotilla yachts, busy main port

TELEPHONE PREFIX: 22980

MAIN TOWNS: The main town and port where all the ferries and hydrofoils dock, is on the small island of Spheria. More or less everything that happens on Poros is centred around Spheria with all of Kalavria given over to countryside peppered with a few attractions.

PLACES OF INTEREST: Megalo Neorion Bay (1km from main town), attractive bay with some sand, Russian Bay (2km), Temple of Poseidon (5km) (although it's not particularly impressive), Monastery Beach (watersports 3km), Askell Beach (1km) (main tourist beach as edged with many hotels that are destinations for the package tour operators).
