About the Greek island of Siphnos

POPULATION: About 2,000 of which about 1,600 live in or around the capital of Apollonia and its satellite villages.

GEOGRAPHY: Up to 20 km from top to bottom and about 10 km wide, with an area of about 74 sq km. The main areas of agriculture are neat and intensive with many fields enclosed by stone walls. The valleys and river gorges are impressive. The countryside is sprinkled with dwellings and magnificient castellated dovecotes.

GENERAL IMPRESSIONS: The initial impression of tidiness and well-being is reinforced throughout Siphnos. Greek holiday resort, neat countryside, fanciful ceramic chimney pots, clean and neat, green and cultivated, relatively unspoilt, dovecotes and windmills.

MAIN TOWNS: The main town is Kamares and it's also the main port which is a clean, orderly fishing village seaside holiday resort with an aura of wealth. It is impressively potiioned in an amphitheatre of massive mountains. Apollonia is 5km inland from Kamares, is a busy and active center of the island capital. Pharos, 7 km on the south east coast is a small sleepy holiday resort with a pretty old quarter. Platy Gialos (Plati Yialos) is 10 km from Apollonia on the coast could of Pharos. Kastro is on the east coast 3.5 km from Apollonia and has a medieval fortress and an exceptionally beautiful, clean  whitewashed Chora dramatically positioned on a promentory that falls away sharply on eithe rside into the sea. The streets are in terraced tiers, climbing the hill top in the fashion of a layered cake.
