About the Greek islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca
ALTERNATIVE NAMES: Kefalonia, Cefalonia, Kefallinia, Kephallenia: Ithaka
ISLAND GROUP: Ionian Islands
POPULATION: Cephalonia: 30,000 of which approx 6,000 reside in or around Argostoli Town. Ithaca: 3,650 of which 2,000 reside in the main town of Vathi.
GEOGRAPHY: Cephalonia with an area of 782sq km is up to 35km long and 33 km wide. Ithaca is 29km long and up to 6.5 km wide with a total area of 92.5sq km. Ithika is close to the north east of Cephalonia.
GENERAL IMPRESSIONS: Cephalonia is very dramatic with the majority of the land taken up by mountain ranges. Forest clad with lots of cypress tress. Ravaged throughout history with earthquakes, so tends to have a lot of modern building. Ithaca in spite of having resisted tourism and not being particularly set up for visitors is still very friendly and welcoming to those who stay on the island.
