About the Ionian Greek Islands

The Ionian Islands are set off the western coast of the Greek mainland and include from north to south, the islands of Corfu, Paxos, Antipaxos, Lefkas, Meganissi, Cephalonia, Ithaca and Zakynothos.

Being situated on the western side of the mainland has ensured that historical Turkish influence was kept to a minimum. Instead you will find the Ionian group reflects the expansionist nature of the European colonial powers of France, the UK and Venice.

Despite the present day prosperity relating to tourism there is a very strong agricultural prop to the economy. This is based on grapes, olives, currants, almonds, vegetables, dairy herds, sheep and goats. Shipping still plays and important part in balancing various economies as well.

Overall the Ionian Islands are exceptionally green compared to other parts of Greece. Vegetation is lush and thick even in the height of the hottest summer. One of the reasons for this is comparatively heavy rainfall during the winter months. Even during the summer it is not unusual for these islands to experience sometimes prolonged rain storms occasionally accompanied by the most spectacular lightening and thunder.
