Rather confusingly Dodecanese means twelve islands but actually the Dodecanese group of Greek Islands embodies at least seventeen! But there are only really twelve that are inhabited and so are listed here.

The islands that make up this group offer the widest range of "flavours" of all the Greek island groups. Throughout history the Dodecanese were subjected to almost constant invasion and conquest from the Phoenicians followed by the Minoans of Crete around 2500-1440 BC to finally the Italians in the 20th century. Just about every nation has had an influence over the centuries, some leaving a more permanent mark than others. The group finally acceded to Greece after the 2nd World War.

Patmos has a monastic feel about it; on Leros there's a definite Italian art deco influence; the port at Kalimnos bustles with activity; Kos buzzes with tourist activity throughout the season; Nisiros is quaintly charming; Tilos very quiet; the peace and quiet of Simi is invaded with day-trips; Karpathos is rapidly becoming more popular; Rhodes has a charming medieval city feel or there is the forlorn, remoteness of Kasos.
