My Greek Island Home
Buying & selling Greek Islands Real Estate - building, renovating, owning property & living in Greece

Volunteer Contributing Editor

We need a Volunteer Contributing Editor (a VCE for short) for each of the islands on our site. This is an unpaid function.

If you are knowledgeable about your island, like writing articles, encouraging others to tell you what's happening, are good at finding out information and generally sharing your enjoyment of your home island, or you have a special interest in promoting the best interests of your island for free (such as the municipality), we would like to hear from you.

What you will do specifically:

  • You'll contribute by writing articles about various topics related to living in your island to keep the website full of new and interesting content making it appealing to visitors especially those thinking of buying property on your island.
  • You'll keep an eye on new content to check that articles supplied by other contributors (site users) are correct and accurate. (Our copyright editor will have already approved them before they reach you - however we need you to make sure that if the article says for example that there is a boat that leaves at 10pm, that this is true!)
  • Once you are comfortable working with the site, and us, you will be given Editor status for your allocated island so that if there are any errors in articles, you will be able to edit them to make corrections. (Which you'll find easier than sending us an email about every little change.)
  • You will be a point of contact for any site visitors with questions about your island. Enquiries will be sent to you by contact form and you can choose whether to include your phone numbers.
  • If yours is a large island, you'll encourage others to share the load with you  by "recruiting" volunteer reporters to cover specific subjects such as wining & dining, arts & culture, events & festivals, transport and sports, etc.
  • You will encourage experts in your island to become Bloggers.
  • You will cooperate closely with the Advertising Sales Agent for your island.

We don't pay our VCE's but in our experience, we have found that (if they want them) they can pick up jobs because they effectively become a point of contact for their island and so the VCE will get paid by the people requesting their services. If the VCE has time and a requirement to make money, they may also apply to be the Advertising Sales Agent for their island. However, it must be noted that the main motivation for anyone applying to be a VCE is to enjoy using the Internet to share their knowledge about their island.

As a minimum:

  • You must be fluent in English and able to write well-constructed articles and be able to speak & read enough Greece so you can translate notices of events and information available about your island that might be good material for the site.
  • Own or have regular access to a computer and a reliable connection to the Internet with your own email address.
  • Own or have regular access to a digital camera and be able to take photos to illustrate your articles with.
  • Be able to navigate the Internet and send emails.
  • Be resident in the island you represent at least 60% of the year.
  • Know your island intimately or be prepared to get to know it.
  • Have at least 2 hours per day (or possibly at night if you're covering an event) to work without distractions.

A Position of Responsibility

The Internet is a powerful tool, reaching and influencing millions of people around the world. We feel that it is vital that our Volunteer Contributing Editors realise that they will be holding a position of real responsibility, not just to us but also more importantly to the island that they represent. You must be fair, just, honest, unbiased and able to put across even "bad news" in a positive well-balanced manner. You will never make recommendations or endorse one particular business - instead you will answer questions such as "which builder do you recommend" with "I would suggest you get a quote from at least three of the builders you will find on ..." You must have a caring attitude towards the island that you represent.

Type of Background & Previous Experience:

Our site is offering a comprehensive guide (with much of the information included for free) for each of the islands promoting all business and services with an emphasis on property ownership rather than just tourism. The types of people who might be interested in being a VCE with us in order to promote their island as a place to live includes:

  • An officer from the Municipality - after all we are providing a free resource that the Mayors of each island will be able to use to help promote all the businesses they represent.
  • A local tourist/information office who perhaps doesn't already have a website, wants one but doesn't really have a technical background, time or budget to build one for themselves.
  • A local business person who wants to promote their own business for free in exchange for providing articles about island wide subject and keeping an eye on the other content of the site for their island. This might be a real estate agent, a lawyer, architect or someone in the building trade.
  • Someone who is already a writer or is considering a writing or reporting career and wants a showcase for their material that they can refer to in a CV.
  • A student who wants to gain experience before going on to university and can use the work they do for the site as a reference, perhaps even using the site as a project for their studies.
  • A mum returning to work once her children have started full-time school and want to learn more about the Internet and wants to broaden her interests.

Local knowledge, good contacts with the local community, willingness to go out and meet people to find information, to communicate well and obtain trust within your community and enthusiasm to promote your island as a place to live rather than just a tourist destination is essential.

Training & Support:

We provide on-line help and how to guides to get you started and then develop. In addition we provide technical and service support by email, phone, MSN and Skype during regular working hours (Monday - Friday, 09:00 - 18:00) plus an out-of-hours emergency hotline.

Handling enquiries can be one of the riskiest and time-consuming issues to get to grips with. As with technical support, we are on hand to help you deal with questions you might be asked and situations that might arise to ensure you don't end up becoming an unofficial, over-worked, full-time, unpaid information bureau for the island!

Interested: Please send your a message with your background, what you're doing now and why you want to volunteer as a contributing editor to our Administrator: Kelsey Edwards, using this form. Thank you for your time and interest.
